Anime Review: "Macross F - The movie" ~Sayonara No Tsubasa~ "[***+]--- An Alternate Ending for Macross F TV Series
Recently, I had been using this phrase "I'm not dead". Yes, really "I'm not dead" even after the devastating earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown that hit Tokyo and the Northeast (Tohoku) area many times. (*1)
Several weeks ago, "Macross F - The movie" ~Sayonara No Tsunasa~(I tentatively called this PART-2) premiered at Japanese cinemas. I watched the much anticipated title, the concluding part of "Macross Frontier the movie" ~Itsuwari no Utahime~(I tentatively called this PART-1).
Here' my own review. (Please note, it may have some spoilers.)
(Note: full-marks is *****)
Really excellent. PART-1 is a good digest of TV series. However, this PART-2 had a different storyline. Overall, the script was very well written although I feel that it crammed too much of the original TV episodes.
I thought that I was sure that producer would not easily kill off the characters. However, the Ending of this movie could be touted as "Shocking". But this was also within my expectation.
(Please see ANN for detail casts/staffs)
The main characters(Saotome Alto, Ranka Lee, and Sheryl Nome) are all well depicted. Ranka and Sheryl wore a wide variety of their costumes (fan services for female viewers), and their stage performances are all very impressive. I think, the one that Sheryl wore just after the curtain-up is one of the best stage scene in recent Japanese animes.
BTW, I'm very enjoyed at seeing cross-dressing of a main character. (^__<)

Again, I have mixed feelings. The overall quality of artwork is excellent. Stage scenes of Ranka and Sheryl are all breathtaking. It's a much improved update of the TV version. However, the quality lacked consistency. For important/highlight scenes, it's definitely excellent. But the artwork for other scenes are not up to mark for a theatre-feature anime.
[The performance of Voice-actors/actresses: ***]
As for Seiyu performances, it's as good as the TV series.
Some new songs are featured in PART-2. The quality of the songs and music composition of PART-2 is the same as TV version. If you like the performances of the original cast, you'll be able to give thumb-ups to the soundtrack for this movie.
In general, it's a great work, and a rather well written ending, I feel. The running-time for part-2 was rather lengthy, nearly 2 hours for a theatre anime. But I didn't feel the time at all. From what I gathered, this movie is highly rated on movie-related social networking sites. (*2)
If you like to see song performances of Ranka and Sheryl, I highly recommend this work.
However, if you a 1st time viewer who see PART-1, but have not seen all TV series, you may feel that you will be left behind by this movie.

1) When the mega-quake hit Tokyo, I was on a train, which eventually stopped during schedule stops. I think that it's the strongest quake that I experienced during my Tokyo life.
